In celebration of Juneteenth on June 19, The Shops at Sharp End organized a vibrant retail expo on Friday to honor the holiday and showcase Black-owned enterprises. Shandrika Harris, the proprietor of Drika Designs, shared a moment with her son Kendrick, 10, while exploring the store, having relocated from Memphis, Tennessee, to Columbia eight months ago. Harris has embraced crocheting over the past year. Opened in January 2024, The Shops at Sharp End serves as a supportive retail ecosystem, empowering emerging businesses by providing them with a physical space, technical training, and essential guidance. During the expo, Amanda Oniyama, assistant manager, engaged with Franky Karmen, who not only showcased her makeup line but also operates a permanent booth within the shops for personalized beauty services. Additionally, Steep & Bloom offered special Juneteenth sales. Nickie Davis, executive director of the Downtown Community Improvement District, conversed with Daniel Edwards, owner of The Spot food cart, about his advocacy against violence through impactful merchandise.
