Ruthie’s Café, a haven of healthy comfort cuisine, has established its presence in South Dallas after transitioning from a food truck to a brick-and-mortar location this February. Launched by Ashlee Kleinert—niece of Lamar Hunt—and the Hunt family, the café honors Kleinert’s grandmother. Dr. Terry Flowers, the headmaster of St. Philip’s School and Community Center, has been a driving force in revitalizing South Dallas, urging Kleinert to create a space offering nutritious meals for the community. “There’s not a place for teachers or community members to gather for coffee or a healthy meal," Kleinert recollected regarding her motivation. With the restaurant now thriving on Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard, Kleinert directs a business model focused on employing individuals from the justice system through a partnership with Unlocking Doors, emphasizing second chances. Financed by the Good Foundation, a portion of sales supports local community services. The café specializes in gourmet sandwiches and innovative drinks, making it a centerpiece for both sustenance and social impact.
