California Senator’s DUI Probe: Sacramento Police Go Public With Search Warrant Details

A California state senator exhibited slurred speech, appeared drowsy, and was unsteady on her feet during a police interaction at a Sacramento hospital following a car accident last month, as detailed in a search warrant approved by a judge for a DUI blood test. Senator Sabrina Cervantes's blood ultimately showed no signs of intoxicating substances, leading Sacramento County prosecutors to drop charges. Now, Cervantes intends to sue the Sacramento Police Department, claiming the targeting was racially and sexually motivated. Her attorney, James Quadra, highlighted that the search warrant obtained via CalMatters bolsters their case. On the day of the incident, Officer Kevin Lucas convinced legal authorities of probable cause for impairment. Cervantes declined field sobriety tests and requested legal counsel first, which officers interpreted as delaying tactics. Despite finding no bias in the officers' actions, law enforcement expert Ed Obayashi reflected on the warrant's adequacy but noted that no bias against Cervantes was apparent in the documentation.
