Aubree and Oscar Petersen relocated to Sacramento two years ago, leaving behind the steep costs and crime concerns of Los Angeles. Yet, settling in posed a challenge for the Petersens and their then-five-year-old daughter. A week before their move, their new apartment complex demanded double the initially agreed deposit, raising their total expenses to nearly $4,000. They temporarily lived in a modest hotel while Oscar, a supermarket meat cutter, adjusted to his job, depleting their savings rapidly. In 2024, the Sacramento region achieved a significant milestone with over 12,500 new housing units, as outlined in a report by the Sacramento Area Council of Governments. Executive director James Corless emphasized that while progress has been made, substantial work remains to meet housing demands, particularly in marginalized communities. The California Housing Partnership revealed that over 54,000 low-income renters in Sacramento County struggle to find affordable housing. Nonprofit Family Promise of Sacramento has supported over 450 families, including the Petersens, helping them find stability amid the housing crisis.
