Saginaw Township celebrates Black History Month with unique event at Fashion Square Mall

SAGINAW TOWNSHIP, Mich. — In celebration of Black History Month, Fashion Square Mall is hosting a unique event that highlights both pre-colonial and post-slavery African American culture presented by Product of Africa.
The month-long observance aims to educate, uplift, and bring the community together.
Hassan Vond, CEO of Product of Africa, emphasized the importance of the event, saying, “People should come out because everyone has a story and everyone has an experience. One of the biggest things today, that mental illness is a big issue, one of the biggest causes is the lack of the ability or the lack of the opportunity to express yourself or tell your story.”
The event, titled “Black Your Story Month,” offers daily opportunities to connect with the community and support Black-owned businesses while highlighting African American history in a meaningful way.
Niara Owens, administrative assistant and acting specialty leasing agent at the mall, said the celebration extends beyond acknowledging history.
“It’s a celebration of Black History, all the positive parts,” she said.
Despite facing threats, negative remarks, and resistance, organizers remain dedicated to the event’s mission.
