On Tuesday, Saint Lucia and Pakistan formalised diplomatic relations during a ceremony at the Pakistan Mission in New York.
Ambassador Menissa Rambally, the permanent representative of Saint Lucia to the U.N., and her Pakistan counterpart, Ambassador Munir Akram, signed the joint communique on behalf of their countries.
“We are delighted to be here today. This, for us, is very special,” Ambassador Rambally stated.
Rambally observed that although the two countries were formalising relations, Saint Lucia has always had a wonderful relationship with the people of Pakistan.
“I think one of the greatest examples of that is through our cricket,” she observed.
In this regard, Rambally noted that former West Indies cricketer Saint Lucian Daren Sammy is an honorary Pakistani citizen.
For his part, Ambassador Akram spoke about the shared love of cricket between Pakistan and Saint Lucia.
The Pakistan diplomat also stated that his country and Saint Lucia had been cooperating at multilateral forums, including the Commonwealth.
Akram asserted that establishing formal relations would serve as the basis for expanding bilateral ties.
He believed formal diplomatic relations would open avenues for mutually beneficial trade, commerce, political cooperation, and tourism relationships.
