Saint Lucia's Piton Sparks secured their third consecutive victory on Tuesday evening during the fifth ECCB International Netball Series, overpowering Antigua & Barbuda 45-33 and handing them their first defeat. This loss follows a string of wins for Antigua over Anguilla, Montserrat, and Guyana.
Taking place on the fourth day at Tanteen Netball Facility in St George’s, Grenada, the score only tells part of the story, as the Sparks maintained a tenuous grasp on the lead until the final quarter. After a close first period, Saint Lucia was ahead 10-7 and held a narrow 18-14 lead at halftime. Despite a tighter match, a strong final quarter, where Saint Lucia outscored Antigua 13-8, propelled them to a decisive twelve-goal victory.
Jo-Ann Anderson shone with 16 goals from 19 attempts, while Melika Destang's performance dipped to 62.5% with 15 successful shots from 24 tries. Player-coach Shem Maxwell added 14 goals from 19 attempts as well.
Post-game, only three teams remain unbeaten, including defending champions St Vincent & the Grenadines and Barbados. On the same day, Barbados triumphed over Anguilla with a score of 65-27, while the Cayman Islands achieved their first victory against Montserrat, 71-10.
