A former lieutenant from the Washington D.C. police force, Shane Lamond, is set to spend 18 months in prison for alerting Proud Boys leader Enrique Tarrio about an impending arrest. Convicted of obstructing justice and providing false statements to federal investigators, Lamond was found guilty in December 2024. As part of his official duties, he was required to monitor the Proud Boys’ activities but instead engaged in clandestine communications with Tarrio via Telegram beginning in July 2019. Lamond shared sensitive law enforcement information and warned Tarrio about a planned arrest related to the burning of a Black Lives Matter banner in January 2021.
Despite investigators not finding any messages on Lamond’s phone, incriminating texts were discovered on Tarrio's device with timed deletions. U.S. District Judge Amy Berman Jackson criticized Lamond for his actions, describing them as fundamentally inconsistent with proper police conduct. Where he deemed his communication attempts to be intelligence-gathering, the judge saw it as a blatant betrayal of duty.
