With this signature, we initiate vital reforms in law enforcement hiring processes. Officers with severe disciplinary histories should not serve our communities, and such histories must be exposed before tragedies occur. The revised hiring protocols will engage a thorough examination of candidates' past employment, verifying their physical and psychological fitness for duty.”This legislation bears the name of Sonya Massey, a mother tragically killed on July 6, 2024, by Sangamon County Deputy Sean P. Grayson. Massey’s plea for assistance regarding a potential intruder led to a fatal confrontation. Grayson, having a history of changing jobs frequently and multiple infractions, raises significant concerns over hiring practices.
