Authorities informed The Courier Journal that Sophia Rosing, a former University of Kentucky student who received a 12-month jail sentence for employing racial slurs against a fellow student in 2022, has been released ahead of schedule. Morgan Hall, the communications director for the Kentucky Justice & Public Safety Cabinet, clarified that Rosing was never in the custody of the Kentucky Department of Corrections. She received a county jail term on October 17, 2024, after her charges were downgraded to misdemeanors. Hall noted, “She accrued pre-sentence and good time credits through the jail, leading to her early release on May 11, 2025.” He emphasized that the Department of Corrections was not involved in her detention or discharge.Following guilty pleas to several offenses, Rosing was tasked with completing 100 hours of community service and assessed a $25 fine. In March, her attorney sought early release, citing her commitment to "personal growth," yet the request was declined. UK President Eli Capilouto remarked on the viral video showing Rosing using “racial slurs and offensive language” towards student Kylah Spring.
