Sorce, a graffiti artist located in Oakland, is passionate about creating art pieces and tagging in urban areas to reclaim public space while championing artistic freedom. During my time at Howard University, I found inspiration in the vibrant street art throughout Washington, D.C. Returning to the Bay Area, I recognized this same comfort, which resonated deeply with my sense of home. My perspective on graffiti broadened last summer when a friend, also a graffiti artist, introduced me to his impressive body of work. Through conversations with Sorce, I learned about the respectful camaraderie within the graffiti community and the collaborative nature of their artistry. The origins of graffiti, rooted in ancient civilizations, reflect the struggle and expression of marginalized voices, similar to the rise of rap in the Bronx during the 1970s. In the Bay Area, graffiti stands as a powerful testament to social justice, storytelling, and artistic identity amidst ongoing gentrification.
