This summer, I celebrated the 4th of July in Harbor Springs, Michigan, alongside my 7-year-old grandson. I aimed to connect with my son, the music director for the Highlands Resort's summer musical dinner theater.Harbor Springs, a picturesque lakeside town in Northern Michigan, is characterized by its rustic allure. Picturesque cottages adorn the streets, and because it’s near Mackinac Island—where motor vehicles are banned—bicycles and boats abound. At the heart of its charm lies the Highlands Ski Resort, featuring a supper club, a lodge with extensive amenities, and a serene duck pond. While skiing season had ended, lift rides were available, offering scenic views from the mountain's summit. Initially hesitant due to my aversion to heights and heat, I eventually accepted my son’s invitation. To my astonishment, the breathtaking views and the relatively manageable hike rewarded my courage. Engaging with other hikers, including an inspiring 81-year-old woman, emphasized the importance of embracing challenges and living purposefully, illustrating that a life well-lived is crafted through intentional choices.
