At Hillcrest High School, shelves are rapidly depleting as students rekindle their passion for literature, exploring everything from contemporary fantasy to graphic novels and manga. Engaging displays, inviting seating, and student-driven book clubs have significantly increased foot traffic, resulting in a remarkable uptick in book checkouts. Sophomore Alexander W. noted, “The library’s tranquility and friendly librarians keep me returning. Spending time there enhances my school day, making it more productive and peaceful.” Media specialist Nina Canales diligently transforms this space to resemble a welcoming bookstore, continuously updating the collection with new releases. “The objective is to make reading feel intimate,” she explained. As conversations about literature flourish, a newly formed student club, “My Book It–Make It Club,” brings stories to life through creative projects. Overall, book checkouts district-wide surged from 147,339 in September 2024 to 169,768 in September 2025, showcasing a vibrant culture of reading that is only expected to grow. The dedicated librarians of Dallas ISD aim for a million checkouts this academic year, striving to prepare students for both their academic and life journeys.
