When Tanisha Tate’s phone rang on August 16, 2013, she had no inkling that the call would shift her life significantly. On that day, her vivacious mother collapsed in a parking lot, leading to a diagnosis of a brain tumor, specifically a meningioma, necessitating surgery. Although the procedure successfully excised the tumor, a catastrophic stroke during the operation resulted in her mother spending nine months in a hospital. Consequently, she lost mobility on her right side and her ability to speak, now living with Aphasia, a disorder impacting communication capabilities.
Reflecting on their journey, Tate stated, “We traversed eight hospitals and rehab centers before choosing for her to live with me.” Her experiences became the foundation for her book, Who Cares for the Caregiver, a candid exploration of caregiver challenges that emphasizes the necessity of self-care. Tate's insights aim to support fellow caregivers navigating similar struggles, grounding her perspective in over a decade of dedicated experience.
