Following a D rating from the Texas Education Agency two years prior, Principal Nesha Maston recognized the urgent need for transformation at Sam Tasby Middle School.“We felt discouraged, but rather than surrender, we motivated ourselves to take necessary action,” she remarked. As the 2024-2025 academic year commenced, the district aimed for a modest goal of improving by one level, yet Maston envisioned greater potential for her teachers and students.Their efforts validated her belief. The campus not only achieved a B on the STAAR test but also recorded its highest-ever Texas Education Agency score and gained seven distinctions.Maston emphasized equipping teachers with essential support and resources to thrive, including real-time coaching that fostered a supportive environment. Empowering educators with training and collaboration was vital, noted Alan Shaw, a sixth-grade English teacher. “It cultivates a safe space for sharing practices,” he stated. Celebrating student achievements also played a crucial role, inspiring confidence and ownership over learning. Maston and her team are now ambitiously targeting an A rating for 2025-2026.
