The Black Academy of Arts and Letters (TBAAL) announced an ambitious renovation and expansion plan during a press conference on July 28, unveiling a $250 million project. This initiative is part of Component 4 of the $3.7 billion Kay Bailey Hutchison Convention Center redevelopment, situated at 650 S. Griffin St., while TBAAL’s entrance can be found at 1309 Canton St.Celebrated four times with an Emmy Award, TBAAL is a nationally esteemed arts institution offering over 100 programs annually, including the Riverfront Jazz Festival. It plays a pivotal role in educating youth in various artistic disciplines.“We see this transformation as a catalyst for long-term economic growth within the city,” commented Rosa Fleming, executive director of City Convention Services. The architectural firm KAI aims to modernize TBAAL while honoring its cultural heritage. Improvements in accessibility, functionality, and advanced creative spaces will enhance community engagement, ultimately shaping TBAAL into a vibrant cultural hub by December 2028.
