(Texas State of Representatives) – The timing of Governor Abbott’s special session agenda appears deeply insensitive. Merely five days after devastating floods wreaked havoc across Central and West Texas—resulting in numerous fatalities and many still unaccounted for—he unveiled an 18-item agenda that prioritizes partisan interests over disaster management. As search teams recover bodies from submerged areas and families cling to hope, the governor has redirected his focus toward congressional redistricting and culture clash distractions. Texans merit more than this. They require leaders who prioritize public welfare during crises. The special session ought to center exclusively on disaster response—saving lives, aiding mourning families, and enhancing infrastructure to avert future catastrophes. Redistricting initiatives can be postponed. Let us locate the missing, honor those lost, and restore our communities with respect and solidarity. This embodies the essence of public service: placing people above politics, particularly in our most challenging times. State Rep. Rhetta Bowers represents House District 113, part of Rowlett, Garland, and Mesquite.
