(United Nations) – News from central Texas has been devastating and, more importantly, frustrating because countless lives could have been preserved had elected officials fulfilled their responsibilities. The families mourning their loved ones—over 100 fatalities from the Fourth of July floods—deserve more than mere thoughts and prayers. They require a genuine commitment to rectify the grave errors made by addressing climate change, a problem that has been neglected for far too long. Scientific research unequivocally indicates that the increasing frequency of extreme weather is attributed to climate change, a trend that is set to escalate. According to the director of the Texas Center for Extreme Weather at Texas A&M University, the storms and flooding witnessed in central Texas are a harbinger of what lies ahead. Yet, numerous elected officials seem disinclined to confront this reality. This episode of catastrophic flooding transcends a pinpointed disaster in Texas; it exemplifies a widespread political failure that has been manifesting in various states and primarily in Washington, D.C. Ignoring the lethal implications of climate change is resultantly jeopardizing innocent lives, including many children.
