The Texas Longhorns are set to commence the college football season as the top-ranked team in The Associated Press Top 25 for the very first time. The recent poll released on Monday reflects a razor-thin margin, with Texas edging past Penn State by just five points—marking the closest preseason result since 1998.
For an unprecedented fifth consecutive year, Texas claimed the preseason No. 1 spot in the Southeastern Conference, amassing 1,552 points and receiving 25 first-place votes. Penn State closely followed with 1,547 points and 23 first-place votes, achieving their highest preseason ranking since leading off the 1997 season at the top.
As they dive into the season, Texas faces a formidable challenge—opening against third-ranked Ohio State, the reigning champions, on August 30. This matchup presents an opportunity for redemption after Ohio State's previous 28-14 triumph in the Cotton Bowl during last season's playoff. The top ten is rounded out by teams like Georgia, Clemson, Miami, Alabama, LSU, Notre Dame, and Oregon.
