Texas NAACP Calls GOP’s Treatment of Rep. Nicole Collier Unacceptable

The Texas NAACP expresses its unwavering support for Hon. Nicole Collier, D-Fort Worth, who has been effectively detained against her will on the floor of the Texas House of Representatives. This action follows her refusal to sign a controversial “permission slip” instituted by the GOP, which mandates escorts from the Department of Public Safety for Democrats who previously broke quorum concerning redistricting. Collier arrived at the Capitol voluntarily, committed no offense, and aimed to assist in establishing quorum. Her actions, rooted in constitutional rights, cannot justify her detention.This situation reveals the lengths to which Texas GOP leaders will go to undermine African Americans, reminiscent of a past when full personhood was denied. A newly proposed redistricting map diminishes communities, harkening back to an era when African Americans were regarded as three-fifths of a person. Such actions, reminiscent of Jim Crow, are alarming and threaten the foundational principles of representation and equality. The Texas NAACP calls upon all Texans to recognize and challenge this perilous moment for democracy.
