(Texas State Troopers Association) – Texas is poised to receive upwards of $10 billion in federal reimbursement following the enactment of President Trump’s Big Beautiful Bill. These funds are earmarked to compensate Texas for its border security initiatives under Operation Lone Star. This presents a unique opportunity to allocate these resources meaningfully for those who have ensured our communities' safety.
Governor Greg Abbott has summoned the Legislature for a Special Session beginning July 21. I have urged him to prioritize a cost-of-living adjustment or 13th check for retired state troopers and DPS employees. These individuals dedicated their careers to safeguarding Texans under challenging conditions, yet many now face financial hardship in retirement.
DPS retirees have not seen a meaningful adjustment in over two decades, while healthcare and living costs have surged. Early this year, the Texas House passed HB 886 by Rep. Cody Vasut to authorize a one-time 13th check, garnering bipartisan support, yet the Senate did not advance it.
This proposal represents a small fraction of the substantial federal funds, and we must seize this opportunity to uphold our commitment to these dedicated professionals. It’s time to take tangible action that honors their service. Governor Abbott alone can decide...
