As we honor the start of Black History Month by commemorating the incomparable achievements and contributions of Black people to society, I’d like to urge us to confront this nation’s ugly past with unyielding honesty and determination. This is particularly important when we have candidates on the national stage whose words and actions seek to misrepresent, dehumanize, and ultimately erase us and our history. Amidst the vileness we see today from these politicians let us not forget that our strength as a community lies in our unity. We reject division and embrace solidarity, because we know that only by being Stronger Together can we dismantle the entrenched systems of inequality that continue to plague us in society. We are committed to a future where equity, justice and inclusivity are not just buzzwords, but lived realities for all. Let’s not forget the undeniable contributions of Black people to society and art. From groundbreaking innovations to revolutionary artistic expressions, our shared American cultural landscape is richer because of Black brilliance.
