Researchers underline the significance of engaging in physical activity earlier in life to mitigate future brain degeneration risks. However, a recent study indicates that individuals aged 45 and above can still benefit from exercise. The research, published on November 19 in JAMA Network Open, reveals that higher levels of physical activity in midlife and later life correlate with a 41% and 45% reduced risk of dementia, respectively. Midlife encompasses ages 45 to 64, while late life ranges from 65 to 88.Dr. Sanjula Singh from Harvard Medical School noted, “This study shifts the narrative from the general benefits of exercise for the brain to specific timeframes when exercise plays a crucial role in brain health.”Though the study does not specify ideal exercise amounts due to its measurement methodology, Dr. Phillip Hwang emphasizes the importance of increasing daily activity levels to support brain health. Engaging in regular aerobic exercise and maintaining an active lifestyle are fundamental for reducing dementia risks.
