“Instill these teachings in your children. Discuss them at home and during your travels, from evening until morning. Record them on your doorframes and gates.” Deuteronomy 6:4–9 (NIV).
“Safeguard elements that narrate your history. Enslaved individuals often lacked the capacity to read or write, making storytelling vital—it asserts: ‘I existed.’” Maya Angelou.
“Juneteenth isn’t something new; it’s a genuine observance.” Rev. Perry Spencer Sr.
Five years ago, my email overflowed.
Every organization I knew sent messages proclaiming their dedication to diversity, equity, and anti-racism during the tumultuous summer of 2020. Juneteenth was amplified as a national holiday, familiarizing many with this historic celebration.
For me, as a Texan’s child, Juneteenth was not unfamiliar. My father expressed, “We have commemorated Juneteenth for generations. Its power lies in the narrative and our duty to share it amid silence or noise.”
Years later, I reflect on his wisdom as many companies retract their commitments. Juneteenth endures, rooted in ancestry and heritage.
Embrace the legacy—honor your elders, support Black enterprises, and carry forth the narrative.
