This obsession undermines our genuine identities, establishing a hierarchy that values modified appearances over natural beauty. The repercussions are extensive, and as a Black woman, I have experienced this detrimental mindset firsthand. It emerges in subtle yet painful manifestations, persistently implying that our authentic selves are deemed "unpolished" or "unappealing." This reality is disheartening. The role of parental support is vital, particularly in nurturing children's emotional well-being. Parents must be attuned to their children's emotional struggles.
