‘There’s just more love’ after North Texas town restored mural with anti-LGBTQ+ graffiti

A North Texas mural that began as a class project has turned into a communitywide effort after the city of Denton came together to cover up anti-LGBTQ+ graffiti. At the western edge of the Texas Woman’s University campus, a 70-foot mural brightens what was once a plain wall. When the art was defaced with homophobic messages during Pride month, almost 100 community members helped restore the work at a July 20 event. “I think the city of Denton really is a loving community and my sentiments were proved right,” said Giovanni Valderas, a drawing and painting professor at TWU. “People were determined to send a message that unity in this community is really important.” The “Your Dream, Your Legacy” mural was originally created in December, part of a class taught by Valderas. The piece was designed by an all-female team of undergraduates. While this was the second time TWU offered a mural class, it was the first permanent installation to come out of it. “There’s this new legacy that we want to continue on campus, creating works by students and for students that are reflective of their time,” Valderas said.
