A man from North Carolina, who claims he faced a diabetic crisis, is suing the Spruce Pine Police Department after being violently subdued in a Walmart parking lot near Asheville. Dillon Ledford's extensive 58-page federal lawsuit, filed on June 5, names three officers: Capt. Michael Hollifield, Officer Michael Sale, and Officer Dalton Mace. He asserts accusations of excessive force and negligence regarding medical assistance during his February arrest.
Prior to the incident, Walmart staff had requested a welfare check as Ledford appeared unresponsive in his vehicle for over 40 minutes. Despite the non-criminal nature of the call, arriving officers reportedly displayed aggression. Surveillance footage captures physical assaults on Ledford, who was allegedly in diabetic shock and unable to defend himself.
Experts, including police use-of-force specialist Seth Stoughton, condemned the officers' response, highlighting serious failings in both training and protocol. The lawsuit seeks redress for constitutional violations, aiming for a jury trial. The town’s attorney has pledged to evaluate the lawsuit upon receipt.
