Hospital officials confirmed on Friday that a physician and a nurse at an Indiana hospital have lost their jobs following an incident involving a Black woman in active labor, Mercedes Wells. A now widely circulated video shows her being denied care at Franciscan Hospital in Crown Point, only to give birth in the couple’s vehicle shortly thereafter. Wells arrived at the facility just after midnight, clearly in labor, yet was dismissed by staff who claimed she “wasn’t progressing.” Following their instructions to leave and return if conditions worsened, she soon experienced complications, resulting in her husband, Leon, capturing footage of her holding their newborn mere feet from the hospital that rejected her.In response to the incident, Franciscan Health Crown Point has announced an internal investigation, asserting that patient safety is their utmost priority while dodging inquiries about the incident. The apparent disregard for Wells' situation has ignited widespread outrage and has highlighted ongoing disparities in maternal healthcare for Black women in America.
