During my sixth-grade year, I engaged in a quiz-bowl event titled the Black Facts Challenge alongside classmates, where we explored the remarkable contributions of Black Americans, such as Booker T. Washington and Duke Ellington. Our dedication led us to claim victory in a citywide championship, instilling in me a deep connection to these historical milestones. Witnessing my own heritage mirrored in academic contexts significantly ignited my enthusiasm for education, shaping my path as a student and eventually as an educator. This experience is a pivotal reason I now oversee DonorsChoose, a nonprofit focused on equipping teachers with vital resources for their students. Regrettably, the troubling gender disparity in college enrollment at historically Black colleges and universities, paired with the stark underrepresentation of Black men in K-12 education, poses a threat to similar motivating experiences for Black boys. Enhancing recruitment efforts and resources for HBCUs is essential for nurturing a future cadre of Black educators who can inspire young minds.
