The Saint Lucia Meteorological Services has announced the formation of a tropical wave just over a week before the 2024 Atlantic Hurricane season officially starts on June 1. “A tropical wave over the central Tropical Atlantic is moving westward near 20 mph or 31 km/h and is expected to affect our region from Saturday afternoon into Sunday,” Forecaster Shamma Joseph wrote in the Noon weather report. A tropical wave is an elongated area of relatively low pressure that moves east to west across the tropics.  Given favorable conditions, these features can lead to tropical cyclone formation. However, weather experts do not expect the existing tropical wave to develop significantly. The experts have issued a warning, predicting that the 2024 Atlantic Hurricane Season could be one of the most active on record. A Colorado State University outlook has forecast 23 storms, eleven of which will become hurricanes. The University’s meteorology team predicted five hurricanes would reach Category 3 or above. The first named system in the Atlantic basin typically forms around mid-to-late June, with meteorologists tracking the first hurricane by August.
