Vernon Jones, a former Democratic state representative who shifted allegiance to support President Donald Trump, declared his candidacy for Georgia's secretary of state on Monday. Embracing the moniker “Black Donald Trump,” Jones previously campaigned for Congress in 2022 under Trump’s endorsement, which furthered the president’s debunked assertions that the 2020 election in Georgia was fraudulent. In his campaign video, Jones stated, “Trust in our elections has been shaken,” emphasizing the need for secure elections and ballot protection. Current Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger is pursuing a governor's position in the 2026 elections. Gabriel Sterling, Raffensperger’s former aide, is vying to succeed him. Candidates also include Tim Fleming and Kelvin King, both of whom resonate with Trump supporters concerned about election integrity. Additionally, Democratic contenders Adrian Consonery Jr. and Penny Brown Reynolds, a former judge with reality TV experience, are in the race. Jones proposes switching to paper ballots and enhancing voter ID regulations if elected.
