UN Chief Urges End To Criminalising Same-Sex Relationships

The United Nations Secretary-General has called for an end to criminalising same-sex relationships in a message to mark the International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia, and Transphobia, observed on Friday. António Guterres also urged an end to discrimination and harmful practices against lesbian, gay, bisexual, transsexual, intersex and queer (LGBTIQ+) communities.   In addition, he called for respect, dignity, and human rights for all. Guterres applauded the ‘brave work’ of LGBTIQ+ activists fighting to outlaw discrimination and secure equality before the law.  However, he noted a ‘worrying surge’ in the opposite direction.  “New laws are codifying old bigotries, exploiting fears, and stoking hate,” the UN Chief observed.
