At a United Nations Security Council session held on Monday, Martha Pobee, the Assistant Secretary-General for Africa, delivered a concerning assessment of the worsening security and humanitarian landscape in South Sudan. Pobee informed the Council that since March, all previous advancements towards peace have been reversed. Ongoing military activities, particularly involving the White Army militia, persist. This militia prominently consists of the Niolitic Neur ethnic group, with potential ties to Vice-President Riek Machar.Machar was detained in March 2025, facing allegations of conspiring to instigate a rebellion and inciting civil war. Along with his wife, Angelina Teny, the country’s interior minister, he was placed under house arrest. Previously, Machar condemned the arrival of Ugandan troops into South Sudan on March 11, meant to support President Salva Kiir Mayardit. The ongoing conflict has severely disrupted oil flow to Port Sudan, resulting in significant revenue losses for South Sudan. Pobee highlighted that approximately 9.3 million people require urgent aid, as funding reductions leave many without essential assistance. She urged the opposing factions to recommit to the peace agreement, emphasizing the population's reliance on their cooperation. (Photos: YouTube Screenshots)
