Fifteen community organizations across the South Side and adjoining suburbs have received significant summer funding. Southland RISE, a collaborative initiative from UChicago Medicine and Advocate Health Care, has allocated $150,000 to support grassroots programs focused on youth development, trauma care, and violence prevention. These grants are projected to enhance the lives of over 8,000 young individuals and families through various creative, mental health, and leadership initiatives, including jump rope, bike repair, theater, and therapy. Since its inception in 2019, Southland RISE has disbursed nearly $1 million, empowering over 80 organizations to expand their community-driven efforts. The summer grantees highlight diverse approaches to addressing trauma and disinvestment. Notably, FAM Entertainment Theatre’s “HEAL” program in Bronzeville utilizes storytelling and performances to aid youth in emotional processing. Similarly, Burst Into Books combines literacy with wellness in Roseland, while Beautiful Beginnings in Greater Grand Crossing employs double-dutch games to foster teamwork and financial education. Sista Afya is providing therapy for Black teen girls and women in surrounding areas, reinforcing community support systems.
