Last week, the United States Department of Agriculture temporarily halted its 1890 National Scholars Program. However, due to backlash from lawmakers, advocates, and academic institutions, the initiative was swiftly restored. As outlined on the USDA's official site, the program is designed to assist “students from rural and underserved areas pursuing studies in food, agriculture, natural resources, and related fields.” Recipients of these scholarships enjoy comprehensive coverage, which includes tuition, fees, textbooks, and accommodations at one of the nation's 1890 land-grant historically Black colleges and universities. For the fiscal year 2024, the USDA has allocated 1890 scholarships to 94 promising students, reaffirming its commitment to enriching educational opportunities in historically marginalized communities.
