Flo Hyman's remarkable achievements and extensive accolades have earned her a place in the U.S. Olympic and Paralympic Hall of Fame, 41 years after she contributed to a medal-winning U.S. Olympic volleyball squad and 39 years following her tragic death. Ruth Nelson, Hyman’s teammate and coach at the University of Houston, accepted the honor on her behalf, recalling Hyman’s generosity when she became the first female athlete to receive an athletic scholarship there. “She wanted to share it with everyone,” remarked Nelson, highlighting Hyman's character. After dedicating three collegiate seasons to her team, Hyman shifted focus to the national squad, facing challenges—including the U.S. boycott of the 1980 Olympics. By the 1984 Olympics in Los Angeles, Hyman stood as the tallest and oldest team member, helping secure a silver medal. Nelson emphasized Hyman's legacy in diversifying volleyball and noted her impact on the sport, with additional female inductees like Gabby Douglas and Serena Williams celebrated alongside her.
