Our sentiments toward America should not be misconstrued as hatred; rather, we have been instrumental in its creation. Through relentless labor and innovation, our ancestors crafted this nation while it consistently denied our humanity. They cultivated its lands, maintained its households, served in its military, and supported its economy. If we truly despised America, we could have chosen to abandon it long ago or witnessed its downfall due to its contradictions. Yet love and hate are not opposing forces; instead, the opposite of animosity is trust—a trust that remains unearned among Black individuals. Generations of Black Americans have continuously been challenged to validate their patriotism. We’ve sacrificed for freedoms too often withheld. The rallying cries for equity reflect our awareness and hope. Although skeptics label our dissent as un-American, it stems from a desire for accountability. Our critique of America is borne from lived experience; trust should be cultivated, not imposed. We are anchored not in animosity but in the enduring faith that America can fulfill its promises.
