A shocking discovery emerged in a California elementary school yearbook when a 1940s newspaper article featuring racial slurs aimed at Black children was published, igniting anger among parents and the community. Montclair Elementary School in Oakland released its yearbooks for the 2024-2025 session, including historical articles about school events. Within one article from October 1940, concerning the annual carnival, an offensive term was present in a description of carnival games. Parents expressed their outrage, with complaints reflecting disbelief over the inclusion of such content in 2025. While the PTA historian acknowledged her oversight, the principal labeled the article "deeply hurtful" and proposed a temporary sticker solution. Many, however, believe a complete recall and reissue of the yearbooks is necessary. Refunds are being offered as the school considers publishing new editions.
