Elise Schenck Data News Weekly Contributor Since its establishment as a Site of Remembrance in 2014, the Whitney Plantation has been more than a Historical Landmark; it has become a beacon for truth, remembrance, and resilience telling the stories of Louisiana and American History. The 10th-Anniversary Gala of the Whitney Plantation celebrates the collective commitment to educating future generations on the untold stories of those who endured slavery. Whitney Plantation is a Non-Profit Museum dedicated to the history of slavery, situated on a historical sugar, indigo and rice plantation which operated from 1752-1975. The museum preserves over a dozen historical structures, many of which are listed on the National Register of Historic Places as the Whitney Plantation Historic District. Today, visitors to the site may self-guide through the grounds with an award-winning audio tour, which is available in six languages. Trained staff members stationed throughout the grounds answer questions and further educate guests about the history of the site. In addition to self-guided tours, visitors may take guided tours with our interpreters, which are offered at regular times throughout the day.
