Chicago School Faces Lawsuit After 10-Year-Old Black Girl Allegedly Endures Daily Racial Abuse and Violence, Only to Be Blamed for Disruptions

A Chicago mother has filed a lawsuit against the public school system, claiming that her daughter experienced persistent racist harassment and sexual misconduct at Wildwood Elementary, with school officials failing to intervene. Sher’Ron Hinton contends her now-13-year-old daughter, one of the few Black students in her class, began facing abuse in 2022, during fifth grade. The lawsuit alleges an "escalating campaign of race-based, verbal, sexual, and physical harassment" that was either reported to or known by Wildwood staff. It details incidents of body shaming and direct threats. In one case, after expressing suicidal thoughts, the staff conducted an assessment but kept Hinton uninformed about critical developments, including a safety plan. The complaint also notes an inappropriate interaction with a teacher and retaliation from peers after her daughter reported bullying. Hinton’s attorney emphasized the severity of the ordeal, highlighting a lack of administrator support.
