Whether legal or not, Black women face the highest eviction rates. A recent study revealed that Black women of reproductive age, who experienced eviction during their lives, reported inferior health outcomes. Researchers surveyed over 1,400 Black women in three Michigan counties, discovering that a staggering 50% had undergone court-ordered or illegal evictions. Surprisingly, most participants did not fit the stereotype of low-income single mothers. Dr. Shawnita Sealy-Jefferson, lead author, emphasizes that evictions often stem from issues beyond missed rent, such as sexual harassment and illegal lockouts, contributing to long-term health detriments. Solutions must address systemic racism, including reparations, tenant protection, and increased housing assistance to combat the structural roots of evictions and improve health equity.
