Leangela Frazier recalls the moment her life became unstable. At 39, this single mother of four left a tumultuous relationship and found herself switching between friends' couches. A friend directed her to Women’s Empowerment, a Sacramento nonprofit dedicated to aiding women facing homelessness. Frazier attended orientation and enrolled in a demanding nine-week course. “The nine weeks flew by as if just nine hours,” she noted. Through the program, she explored trauma, domestic violence, and self-care, while also refining her résumé and cover letter. With a newfound awareness of her past trauma, Frazier gained confidence. A National Center for Victims of Crime report highlighted alarming statistics about abuse among Black women, underscoring her journey. Ultimately, she secured an apartment and began her role as a behavior technician. Recently, Frazier joined 30 other graduates at Women’s Empowerment’s 24th annual gala, which raised $225,000, celebrating the power of resilience and community support, as emphasized by founding director Lisa Culp.
