The Georgia Lions Lighthouse Foundation (GLLF) has joined forces with the YMCA of Metro Atlanta to deliver complimentary vision care to children attending YMCA summer day camps. Events are set to take place at eight YMCA facilities in Metro Atlanta, where campers will undergo vision screenings. Those who need vision assistance will receive follow-up eye exams and glasses at no cost to their families.GLLF's initiative aims to screen 10,000 youth across Georgia within the next two years, anticipating that around half will necessitate additional care. According to Beth Ehrhardt, GLLF's executive director, increased screen time since the pandemic has adversely affected student vision. This change prompts a myopic eye shape, resulting in a higher dependency on glasses.Furthermore, students often lack awareness of their vision issues, leading to struggles in the classroom and diminished literacy rates. Drew Hullinger, vice president of residential and outdoor programs at YMCA of Metro Atlanta, emphasizes the accessibility of care provided on-site, which supports children's overall well-being and academic success.
