A pastor affiliated with Christian nationalism is once more facing criticism for incendiary remarks targeting Black Americans. Joel Webbon, senior pastor of Covenant Bible Church in Austin, Texas, recently contended that the advantages afforded to Black individuals in the U.S. due to slavery far surpass the historical oppression they endured. He provocatively placed blame on Black Americans for their own persecution. On his podcast, Right Response Ministries, Webbon asserted, “Cut it out. You’re throwing a tantrum. It’s your fault.” He further elaborated that the arrival of Europeans was crucial, claiming that it brought medicine, infrastructure, and Christianity, which he believes improved lives.Despite backlash surrounding a clip of these comments shared on X, Webbon attempted to contextualize his statements in a follow-up video. However, numerous users disagreed vigorously, maintaining that a white person cannot dictate the feelings or responses of others to historical trauma. Past controversial assertions include his preference for a white physician and dubious beliefs about crime statistics related to race.
