Wish #2: “We want our children to have a deepening relationship with something that arises out of their own personal interests.” Falk Laboratory School is a progressive K–8 school affiliated with the School of Education at the University of Pittsburgh. Founded in 1931 and independently operated, Falk provides a child-centered learning environment grounded in community, diversity, and experience-based education. Falk’s “Wishes for Our Children” is a set of 21 hopes that Falk educators hold for their students. From learning to study and take effective notes to developing friendships and respecting the natural world, these wishes guide our teaching philosophy and emphasize academic growth and collaboration alongside friendship and play. Yoga and mindfulness classes, building and measuring in the WonderLab, and exploring flora and fauna in Falk Woods are all examples of our commitment to holistic, hands-on learning. As a laboratory school, Falk also hosts local student teachers to complete their training and supports research that develops and refines educational practices.
