In a thrilling showdown on Sunday, Denver Alphonse emerged victorious among 20 cyclists at the National Cycling Road Race and Time Trial, prevailing by a mere fraction over Gillan Moses on the Millennium Highway in Castries. The event featured five under-17 competitors, three athletes from Trinidad & Tobago, and one female cyclist. Participants navigated an eight-kilometer circuit from Sol Gas Station to Owen King EU Hospital Roundabout and back.
Alphonse completed the 103.9 km race in a remarkable 3:08:32.95, edging out Moses at 3:08:32.96, with Fidel Esnard securing third in 3:08:39.50. Challenging weather conditions limited the finishers, with only eight of the initial 15 cyclists completing the race.
Cyril Mangal, president of the Cycling Association, acknowledged the race's overall safety while highlighting opportunities for improvement, particularly for the Elite group. He praised Alphonse's capabilities while noting the need for a more aggressive approach in future climbs.
