Alzheimer's disease presents a multifaceted challenge, notably affecting Black women at a disproportionate rate. The Black Women Inflammation and Tau Study (B-WITS) has been initiated to tackle this crucial health inequality. This innovative study seeks to delve into the distinct elements that elevate the risk of Alzheimer’s among Black women. As previously highlighted by BlackDoctor.org, heightened estrogen levels may correlate with an increased risk of Alzheimer’s, a condition that predominantly affects women, comprising two-thirds of all cases. Central to the B-WITS initiative is the investigation of inflammation and tau proteins—essential components in maintaining brain cell integrity, which become compromised in Alzheimer's. Chronic inflammation has been linked to numerous health concerns, including this disease. The study is currently recruiting a varied cohort of Black women aged 60 and above, particularly those with memory issues or relevant family histories. Comprehensive evaluations will include blood analyses, imaging, and lifestyle assessments, aimed at discerning specific risk factors for this demographic.
