American College of Physicians Honors Bruce Ovbiagele for Advancing Diversity in Healthcare

Bruce Ovbiagele, associate dean and professor of neurology at the University of California, San Francisco, has received the W. Lester Henry Award for Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion from the American College of Physicians. The award is presented to member of the organization who has contributed to advancing diversity in the healthcare field and/or improving health equity for people from marginalized communities. Dr. Ovbiagele has been with the University of California, San Francisco for the past six years. In addition to teaching and conducting research with the university’s Weill Institute for Neurosciences, he serves as chief of staff for the San Francisco Veterans Health System. Prior to his current positions, he was the Pihl Professor of neuroscience and chair of the department of neurology at the Medical University of South Carolina. His academic career has been dedicated to eliminating local and global stroke disparities, as well as mentoring medical students and researchers from underrepresented groups. Dr. Ovbiagle received his medical degree from the University of Lagos.
