COLUMBUS, Ind. – The Landmark Columbus Foundation has proudly introduced the Black Heritage Trail, a vital project spearheaded by dedicated local historian Paulette Roberts. This initiative aims to document significant Black heritage sites throughout the city. The trail illuminates ten remarkable locations that celebrate Black-owned businesses flourishing in downtown Columbus from the late 1800s to the mid-20th century, as well as critical historical events, including Frederick Douglass’ impactful address in 1873.A ribbon-cutting event is set for Thursday, June 19, from 5 to 7 p.m. at the 6th Street Arts Alley. The ceremony will feature remarks from Roberts, historian Brenda Pitts, and Mayor Mary Ferdon. “This initiative pays tribute to the many pioneers who have influenced our community,” Roberts stated. “I hope these markers inspire both reverence for our history and motivate the youth to foster new Black-owned ventures.” Funding for this important project comes from the African American Foundation of Bartholomew County and other essential supporters. Board Chair Tom Harmon underscored the foundation’s dedication to realizing this vision.
