Discrimination Lawsuit: Black HR Employee Takes on Disney Over Alleged Bias Favoring Indian and Asian Candidates

A Black woman formerly employed in human resources at The Walt Disney Company is suing the entertainment powerhouse for wrongful termination, alleging she was dismissed after addressing discriminatory practices affecting Black and Muslim personnel. Rochella Brown began her role in August 2022 but quickly identified troubling discriminatory trends, particularly during layoffs when the company considerably reduced its workforce by around 7,000 employees, disproportionately affecting Black individuals and those over 40 years of age. Brown contends that her concerns about these layoffs were disregarded by management, including HR director Ivania Slater. The lawsuit also highlights a hostile work environment sparked by Disney's public statements following the October 7, 2023, Hamas attacks, which prompted negative generalizations from some employees against Arabs and Muslims. Brown asserts she faced racial discrimination, being overlooked for professional growth opportunities in favor of a less qualified white colleague. Her legal team alleges a long-standing pattern of retaliation against her for highlighting these issues. The lawsuit demands a jury trial for compensation, emotional distress damages, and punitive actions against the defendants. Brown seeks to restore her reputation and promote fairness for all, regardless of race or religion.
